Releases from Missouri DOC Institutions
An Iron County prosecution can result in commitment to the Missouri Department of Corrections, commonly called MODOC. Once Iron County Sheriff Chuck Helton’s office transfers the person to DOC, the county booking has ended, but release has not occurred. MODOC may assign the sentenced person to any suitable statewide institution. The nearest prison should never be guessed.
A later departure from a state institution can lead to parole, conditional release, or another authorized status. In those cases, the person may move from an institution placement to a field-supervision placement while remaining an active MODOC offender. Final discharge occurs when MODOC jurisdiction ends. That date is not simply the date the person walked out of a secure institution.

The official MODOC Offender Search covers active offenders, including incarcerated people, parolees, and probationers. Its landing page expressly says that it does not provide information on discharged offenders. The active-only limit controls every interpretation of a result or missing name.

- Open a plausible result and compare DOC ID, middle name or alias, age or birth details if shown, offense, county, and sentence.
- Determine whether the placement is an institution or a field office. Never describe a field office as a prison.
- Record the exact label and value for any minimum, conditional, parole, or projected date.
- If the person is field-supervised, ask the listed or responsible Probation and Parole office for public status confirmation.
- If no result appears, move to the nightly offender data, a Sunshine request, and the court record without declaring discharge.

Missouri DOC Release Status Types
A result should be classified by the agency status it actually shows. Physical location and legal jurisdiction are related, but they are not the same field.

Probation is not proof of a prior prison release. A Missouri court may impose probation without a prison stay, including through a suspended sentence structure. Read the judgment before describing the person as released from an institution.

A minimum or projected date is not an actual exit date. Record its exact label. A field-office placement may support a conclusion that the person left secure prison, but a caseworker or field officer is the better source for a disputed or nuanced status.

MODOC is a statewide system, not one Iron County facility. For an Iron County field-supervision lead, the current MODOC profile assigns the county to District 15. A legacy official sheet lists an Ironton sub-office, but its older District 36 label conflicts with the current profile. Confirm the office and reporting location before travel.

Missouri section 610.023 requires the custodian to act as soon as possible and by the end of the third business day. Production may occur later for reasonable cause if the response gives a detailed explanation and earliest production date. State correctional records use several dates that should never be collapsed into one generic “release date.” The court sentence starts the legal framework. Changes may result from corrected jail credit, an amended judgment, concurrent or consecutive sentence interpretation, parole action, program completion, discipline, a board extension, a new detainer, appellate relief, return to custody, or data correction. A printed future date should not be reported as an accomplished release.
Missouri Prison Release Rules
Under section 558.011, eligible felony terms contain prison and conditional-release portions. The conditional portion varies with the sentence framework, and the Parole Board may extend the prison term through the statutory process. A calculated transition date is not an unconditional promise of release.
Section 558.019 contains minimum-term rules for covered cases. Its dangerous-felony provision applies an 85-percent requirement under the statute’s terms, but “dangerous felony” is a defined category. It is incorrect to claim that every Missouri inmate serves 85 percent. The governing version, offense, judgment, prior commitments, and other applicable rules all matter.
Section 558.041 authorizes MODOC good-time policy for eligible DOC offenders and permits rescission. It does not create a fixed public subtraction that can safely be applied to any sentence. Earned Compliance Credits are also distinct: they may reduce eligible community-supervision terms, not the original prison exit date.
